Joule Sous Vide is Smaller Than Other Top Machines, But Still Packs Plenty of Power
With a height of 11 inches and a weight of just a little over 1 pound, the ChefSteps CS10001 is one of the smallest sous vide appliances out there. It is small enough for you not to worry about where to stash it, as it could very well fit into your top drawer for that matter. Since I have a smaller kitchen this is one of my favorite things about this machine.
Despite being small, it registers a power rating of 1100 W, which is stronger than other brands with bigger sizes. This feature also makes it one of the strongest in terms of power it can yield. Furthermore, it is also capable of heating more than 10 gallons of water, with a minimum depth of 1.5 inches and maximum depth of 8 inches.

The Joule sous vide circulator is made of a durable, water-resistant design, has a body that’s seamless, and of course, made of stainless steel. The entire thing is water-resistant as well. You don’t need to worry about water being splashed on the non-submerged part of the device.
Furthermore, it is also equipped with a magnetic base, as well as a side clip, to allow you to attach it to a vessel or pot without the worry of it falling or tipping the entire pot over. I like this feature, even though I usually like to use a Cambro as a cooking vessel. It’s a detail that shows how carefully designed the Joule is. When I use the Joule I forego my preferred container and use a stock pot. (I usually use the Cambros because I like the visibility of a clear container.)
Equipped with Wireless Control Features
The Joule sous vide machine allows you to go wireless in terms of control. This is made possible thanks to its WiFi 802.11 and Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility of the device. Apart from this, one can also activate Amazon Alexa on this Joule device.
This allows for the Joule to be activated through voice, which is also known as “Interactive Cooking.”

Easy to Use
While using the Joule, the only thing you’d have to worry about would be the pot you are going to use, and what kind of sous vide bags you’re going to be using. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s a simple, well-designed unit that out-performs the competition. Just set your temperature — up to 208 degrees F — and relax while this powerful little immersion circulator takes care of business.
The CS10001 unit allows you to control the device through your smartphone.
The app is free gives you the option of connecting to Amazon’s Alexa. Through the app, you also get access to step-by-step recipes, plus features such as visual doneness, guaranteeing you that you’d never overcook with the sous vide way of cooking.
Things to be Aware Of
The ChefSteps Joule Has No Manual Controls
This could become a problem if the smartphone control system fails. This is unlikely and I haven’t seen reports of this becoming an issue for users of the Joule. This could also be considered as a major disadvantage to those who dislike bringing their electronic gadgets such as expensive smartphones into the kitchen. Or just having one more thing in our day that we need the smartphone for.
The only controls that are found on the device itself are buttons for you to turn it on or off, while all the other settings, such as cooking time and temperature, have to be adjusted through the app.
I usually prefer to have manual controls as an option, as this could also serve as an effective and reliable back-up in the absence of reliable smartphone connectivity. And you know, phones have their issues sometimes.
If you don’t mind bigger sous vide cooking tools, then one of the better options you have in the market nowadays would be the Kitchen Gizmo Simplified Sous Vide Immersion Circulator or the Anova Sous Vide Precision Cooker, WiFi 2nd Gen, 900 Watts. The latter is equipped with the manual controls that this machine could definitely benefit from. I like the Anova and it’s the one I’ve used the most until I gave it to a friend recently upon acquiring the Joule.
ChefSteps Joule CS10001 Review Bottom Line
In terms of achievements, the Joule Sous Vide definitely stands out by effectively managing to incorporate strength and small, convenient weight and size, given that it’s smaller and lighter, yet up to 20-30% more powerful than other devices. If you’re all for a digital way of controlling your materials, then this is definitely the one for you.
